    • Buraucracy in action

Auckland City Council has bid for a street race that will close off areas of Auckland and key city access routes for days at a time annually over a period of seven years. Local groups are infuriated that the Council (which seems to be renowned for its arrogance and general incompetence) have placed the bid without consulting the community. Councillor Scott Milnes explains: "Consulting with community boards and the general public has been a classic case of chicken and egg. Why go through a lengthy and expensive consultation process when we have not yet secured the event?" The Council's idea of consultation apparently is to do it after the decision has been made. Expeditious, I'm sure.

    • Under the bed

We humans tend to try to forget about this space, but for a cat it's just a part of the room with a very low ceiling. We very rarely enter this part of the room (and never with dignity) which perhaps explains why cats like hanging out there. It's their personal human-free zone.
